DIABETES IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA



DIABETES

·         Diabetes is a group of diseases in which sugar levels in the bloodstream are above normal. The disease occurs when a person cannot produce (type 1) or properly use (type 2) insulin.

·         Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Virginia.

§  400,000 adult Virginians have diabetes.
§  132,000 adult Virginians have diabetes and do not know it. (undiagnosed)

·         Diabetes disproportionately affects African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics/Latinos.

·         Diabetes is controllable. People with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.

·         Diabetes increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, amputations, blindness and kidney disease.

  • Risk factors for developing diabetes

§  Being overweight or obese
§  Lack of physical activity
§  High blood pressure
§  High cholesterol
§  Tobacco use

  • Steps to reducing your chances of getting type 2 diabetes:

§  Obtain/maintain a healthy weight.
§  Be active every day - walk, cycle, garden, dance, etc.
§  Eat a variety of foods that are low in fat, cholesterol and salt.
